Deb: On my speedwork days I usually get a headache about 45 minutes after the workout. Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it?

Leslie:
It sounds like you could uses some more carbs in the meals you eat prior to your speedwork. I'd suggest adding an extra half-cup of Cheerios at breakfast and maybe some fruit or some crackers with your lunch. This should help you get rid of your headaches and fuel your body for the workout.

DEB: I'm noticing that with the extra day of running and fewer walk breaks on my long run that I'm feeling worn out. Is this normal?

TOBY:
Feeling worn out when you increase your amount of running is normal, but it is also temporary. Remember, as a new runner you are changing your body-you're giving muscles new tasks and order, so you will definitely feel some rebellion at times. Don't, however, get discouraged. As you get miles under you legs, your body will remember what it has to do and become more accepting of it. You should certainly listen to your body, but you should also expect feelings of tiredness and fatigue-they're your friends of validation.


DEB: Is it important to stretch before and/or after a run?

TOBY:
I think stretching is an important part of any running routine. Just a few minutes is all you need.

DEB: I've only been training for my first half-marathon for two weeks, and my left shin is aching. What should I do?

TOBY:
It's important to take care of that shin pain. Here's what I want you to do: Kneel down so your shins run parallel to the ground and sit on your butt; hold this pose for 75 seconds. Do this religiously every day, both morning and night, and your shin pains will vanish.
