2007 MARATHON GUIDE

A finish line is nice. But if you're looking for a race to remember--with landmarks, redwoods, wildlife, or adventure--these are the must-do 26.2s to mark on your calendar

Life is short.
Marathons are long. This makes it hard to experience all of the amazing 26.2s out there. But then again, if they covered fewer miles and were less demanding, they may not lead us to explore new destinations and discover more about ourselves. So why not embrace the journey? Crossing the finish line may be exhilarating, but marathons that double as seminal events are even more rewarding. So we compiled a list of the 10 marathon experiences you should have in your lifetime--and the 20 races that will make them real. Add one or two to your calendar to get the most out of your life as a marathoner.

Run Off-Road

Our pick: Catalina Marathon
When: March 17, 2007
Contact: www.pacificsportsllc.com

As much as we love big-city road races, there's something to be said for going off the beaten path, which is what the Catalina Marathon is all about. Twenty-three miles of the race traverse wide, well-groomed dirt trails, where the only spectators are the free-range buffalo that roam the Southern California island. (In 1924, 14 buffalo were released here as "extras" for a western film; their population now is about 200.) The course leads runners through pristine wildlands that are seldom seen by tourists. While the surroundings are incredibly serene, the elevation profile is as heart-stopping as the Dow Jones--up, down, up, down. The race finishes at the water's edge in Avalon, where runners take over the town. Soak your legs in the ocean, then head to Luau Larry's for music, dancing, and what else but buffalo wings. It's tough to dance after this marathon, but it will earn you the right to ask for a little "R-e-s-p-e-c-t."

Runner-up: The Trail Marathon
When: April 29, 2007
Contact: www.trailmarathon.com

This double-loop trail marathon in Pinckney, Michigan (20 miles northwest of Ann Arbor), has too many hills to count, and conditions are crazy-unpredictable--a blizzard one year followed by 70 degrees the next. But the peaceful forest surroundings (you'll pass 10 lakes) and laid-back vibe of fellow racers have earned this race a dedicated following.
