10/24/2206 CHERUIYOT TO GET OUT OF HOSPITAL TODAY

Running is on hold for now, but a full recovery is expected

PUBLISHED 10/24/2006

In an incident that, for better or worse, got the Lasalle Bank Chicago Marathon media coverage in outlets that would otherwise have ignored it, Cheruiyot slipped as he neared the finish line as the race's 2006 champion and smacked his head on the ground, ending up with minor bleeding on the surface of his brain. He's due to get out of the hospital today (Tuesday) and is expected to make a full recovery but it will be awhile before he commences running again. The logo material Cheruiyot slipped on is allegedly non-skid in all sorts of weather, but Chicago officials removed it after his fall and will investigate the incident further.
