10/24/2006 TOMESCU-DITA MAKES HISTORY

Romanian pulls of a record setting performance despite a fifth place finish

PUBLISHED 10/24/2006

The Romanian Constantina Tomescu-Dita's overextended frontrunning tactics in Chicago on Sunday proved to be her undoing as she faded to fifth, but she did help pull the top four women - Berhane Adere of Ethiopia, Galena Bogomolova of Russia, Benita Johnson of Australia, and Madai Perez of Mexico - to national records. Meanwhile, we are informed by Race Results Weekly, Tomescu Dita's 25k (1:21:31) and 30k (1:38:30) splits are pendings IAAF world records for those two distances, bettering splits of 1:22:13 and 1:38:49 set by Japan's Mizuki Noguchi at the 2005 Berlin Marathon. The Association of Road Running Statisticians (ARRS), on the other hand, does not recognize enroute times for world records, even if well-measured and documented.
