Keflezighi was running at a torrid pace for ten miles when he dropped out of the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in San Diego with a hamstring cramp on October 8. He's come through tougher problems before. Indeed, his knee tendinitis was so severe in 204 that before the Athens Olympic marathon he told his brother Merhawi "don't be surprised if I DNF." Not only did he finish, he earned a silver medal. On Sunday at the the New York City Marathon, says Keflezighi, "I just hope to rise to the occasion. This may have been a blessing in disguise to get me some rest. It may work to my advantage."
