FALL TRAIL RUNNING SHOE GUIDE 2007

Twelve trail shoes designed to tackle any path you choose.

PUBLISHED 09/04/2007

Brooks Adrenaline ASR 4

We Say: The latest Adrenaline features deeper outsole lugs for better traction and a more breathable mesh upper. According to Shoe Lab tests, it's slightly more flexible than previous versions due to deeper flex grooves. The channel along the outside of the midsole under the heel has also been deepened to better absorb impact. And the rubber in the shoe's outsole continues to be made from sand (not oil), which is better for the environment. The Adrenaline is recommended for medium-framed runners with normal to low arches who need a durable trainer for road and trail running.

Wear-tester says: "This shoe was very comfortable on rocky trails, but it needed better toe protection." --Michael Yoder, 45, Reading

Price: $95
Weight: 12.2 oz (M) 9.7 oz (W)

Fila Flow Refuge

We say: This new shoe from Fila is built lower to the ground and features a midsole that's filled in under the arch to improve pronation control. The gusseted tongue helps keep out trail debris, and the sausage-link laces are designed to stay tied. Testers liked both the style and the fit of this shoe but felt it needed better traction. RW Shoe Lab tests found the Refuge to be one of the firmest and stiffest shoes in this guide, so we recommend it for bigger runners who want a shoe that will serve them well whether on fire roads or at the coffee shop after a run.

Wear-tester says: "Very versatile--good on both trails and roads." --Eric Anderson, 42, East Lansing

Price: $85
Weight: 13.4 oz (M) 11.3 oz (W)

Ecco RXP Mud Slinger XCR

We say: Weighing in at over 15 ounces, Ecco's new Mud Slinger is a beast. It has a waterproof Gore-Tex liner for muddy runs and recessed outsole lugs for improved traction when trail conditions get soft. The transition bridge runs into the forefoot for protection from rocks and roots as well as providing a smooth heel-to-toe action. The midsole has a firm foam post in the rearfoot to help control pronation. Recommended for bigger runners who train on a variety of different trail terrains and want a shoe that is well suited for running or hiking.

Wear-tester says: "A sturdy running shoe--almost like a hiking shoe--that was perfect for rough, muddy trails." --Joanne M. Gray, 49, East Lansing
