BUSY MOMS CAN STILL RUN

Time-saving secrets from a running mother of six

1. Take the short view.
"I run a 5-K, and I'm home by 10 a.m. A marathon and its training takes so much more time and energy."

2. Write everything down.
"I can't keep track of tasks electronically. I have to physically write out to-do lists."

3. Outsource.
St. Geme has a standing online grocery order that's delivered weekly.

4. Stick with easy-to-make meals
I like tacos, rotisserie chicken with rice, and barbecues. "I'm not a good cook, but I can feed people."

5. Schedule downtime.
To soothe sore muscles, St. Geme hits the Jacuzzi three times per week. "I don't have time for chiropractors or massages, but soaking seems to work just as well for me."

6. Double up.
"I have two dishwashers, computers, and washer/dryer combos all in or near the kitchen--a.k.a. Grand Central Station."

7. Power nap.
"In the afternoon I set my alarm for 15 minutes and close my eyes. I get a second wind that carries me through the evening."

8. Get help.
At various times, St. Geme has had au pairs, baby-sitters, and housekeepers. "I realize I'm extremely lucky to be in the position I am," she says. "With six kids, I'd be doing laundry and cleaning all day if I didn't have some help."
