Runner's World Shoe Lab Test Results
New Balance's version of motion control is similar to the Brooks formula: a very broad base of support, with a highly cushioned forefoot. This big-runner staple is the update to the 1121--and it's a significant improvement. Most notably, New Balance added more midsole Abzorb, a shock-absorbing foam that supplements the EVA. In the 1121, the Abzorb appeared in just the core of the midsole. Now it covers the entire forefoot for much better cushioning and midsole durability. New Balance also added a heel-to-toe foot frame to improve overall stability and comfort. The rearfoot has been upgraded as well. The ultra-stable Rollbar has been retained, and there are now three densities of EVA as well as polyurethane in the rearfoot, which extend farther into the midfoot than with the 1121. Result: better overall stability. Of course, all this cushioning and stability add weight, making the 1122 the heaviest shoe in running. For big runners who need the protection, however, the trade-off is worth it. Available in an extra-wide width.
